Planning any event can be rough but especially when it comes to weddings you can feel obliged to invite people you normally wouldn’t. Cousins you never see, uncle’s you didn’t know existed, your Mum’s new boyfriends, kids best friend. WHAT! NO. It’s your day and these head counts really add up fast!
Reducing your guest list can be challenging but necessary. Here are 10 tips to help you cull your guest list:
1. Prioritise: Create a list of must-invite guests, such as close family and friends. Our personal rule at Events With Amie is if you haven’t seen or spoken to them within the last 12 months they probably aren’t close enough to warrant an invite.
2. Categorise: Categorise guests into A, B, and C lists. Start with the A list and add from the B and C lists as space allows. This can also be a great way to fill the seating plan when you have RSVPS who may drop off etc.
3. Limit Plus-Ones: Limit plus-ones to those in serious relationships or married couples. This doesn’t always apply and you have to choose very carefully how you approach it but it can be a great way if you are struggling with budget.
4. Adults Only: Consider having an adults-only event to reduce the guest count.
5. Eliminate Duplicates: Remove guests you’re inviting out of obligation or those you haven’t seen in years.
6. Workplace Boundaries: Limit invitations to close colleagues rather than inviting the entire office. Colleagues wise – do you see them outside of work? If not then they probably don’t need an invite.
7. Family Decisions: Make decisions as a couple and involve parents if they’re contributing financially.
8. Venue Capacity: Let the venue capacity be a guide for your guest list but always keeping your budget and how much you can afford front of mind.
9. Budget Considerations: Keep your budget in mind and cut guests if necessary to stay within limits.
10. Be Honest: Be honest with yourself about who you truly want to share your special day with, who do you want to see in those photos for years to come?
